Basic Care
Wrinkles How often you need to clean face wrinkles varies from dog to dog. You just need to make sure that the face wrinkles stay dry.
I personally use "stridex, sensitive skin" face pads (for humans). Then I use "balmex" diaper rash cream.
Some people just take a damp washcloth and wipe the areas. But I find this doesn't keep the area nearly as clean and dry.
Vomiting
For a minor upset stomach Pepto Bismol or a similar medicine works best. Dose is according to the dog's weight. If there is hard vomiting or if the upset lasts more than 24 hours, take the dog to your veterinarian.
Diarrhea
Kaopektate is most usually prescribed for minor diarrhea. Dose amount depends on the dog's weight. If the diarrhea continues longer than 24 hours or if there is blood in the stool, take the dog to the Vet.
Hot Spots
These are red, weepy, itchy spots. No one seems to really know what causes them. It could be fleas, food, allergies, etc. Clean the area thoroughly. You can wash with shampoo, rinse and dry. Or clean with Baby Wipes with lanolin and aloe. Or wash with Bigeloil. Then apply a medications such as Panalog, Bag Balm, Sulfadene, Schreiner's Healing Liniment (from a feed store) or 1% cortisone cream (you may need to get this from your own doctor). Clean and apply medication daily. You should see improvement by the second day, if not, take the dog to the Vet.
Interdigital Cysts
There are a variety of different ways Bulldoggers "treat" interdigital cysts. I'll tell you what works for me. First, check the foot and pad area carefully. Make sure there is no foreign matter. Also look for ingrown hairs as these seem to be present when an IC pops up. If there's anything in the pad or foot area, remove it (foreign matter, ingrown hair). I then soak the foot in warm water and epsom salt for about 5-10 minutes. I then pat the foot dry and use panolog ointment. Repeat this procedure once a day until the IC has been gone for a day or two.
Allergies
Benadryl can be given for allergies. 1 mg per pound of body weight.
Acne
Bulldogs get acne just like humans. It normally shows up on the chin and/or lip area. Washing the area and using an anti-biotic ointment usually clears it up. you could also put a little Gold Bond on the affected area.
Sometimes ceramic or plastic dishes can cause acne. It's best to use stainless steel water and food bowls. They hold up better and don't seem to pick up fungus and bacteria like ceramic bowls do.
Eyes
Dust, wind, pollen, the things that make your eyes burn and water have the same effect on your Bulldog. You can rinse the eyes out with a solution such as Clear Eyes. If the eyes are badly irritated, use a contact lens ointment such as Bausch & Lomb Duolube. Eye problems are nothing to play around with. If your Bulldogs eyes don't get any better or get worse, call your Vet.
Tails
If your Bully has a tightly screwed tail you're going have to make sure it stays nice and clean. you can do this by cleaning the area with a cotton ball or washcloth. Make sure you dry it good then apply Gold Bond, Panolog ointment, or a dry powder.
Temperature
The normal temperature for a dog is anywhere from 100.5 - 102
Heat
Start giving your Bulldog ice at an early age. That way he'll learn to like it.
Always have a "Real Lemon" on hand. If you're Bulldog gets a phlegm buildup a few squirts down the back of the throat will help. Best advise is........on a hot/humid day, leave your Bulldog at home in the air conditioning.
Insect Bites
You can use Benadryl for insect bites (1 mg per pound of body weight). Also apply ice to the affected area.
Nails
Bulldogs nails should be kept short. You may either use a clippers or grinder.
Anal Gland
Sometimes Bulldogs need a little assistance in this area. The anal sac fluid helps the dog to expell waste. There sometimes can become a buildup of the anal sac fluid and they need a little help ridding of it. I'm not going to get into how to express your dogs anal sacs. If you've never done it before I suggest having your vet show you how to do it.
